The following includes the Prompt instructions for this course’s final Argumentative Essay:
PROMPT:
In “What You Eat is Your Business”, Balko takes the position (his thesis statement) that government should not interfere with what we eat.  He laid out several arguments why.  He also gave his solution to society’s obesity problem.
In your argumentative essay, you will take the opposite position, i.e.,  that government intervention/control/interference in citizens’ behavior can sometimes have a beneficial effect. That is, your position is just the opposite of Balko’s. It does not have to be limited to food and obesity; it could be government’s attempt at other health issues (other than obesity), safety issues, and so on.
INSTRUCTIONS for the Argumentative Essay:
1)      5-paragraph essay – no less than 2.5 pages typed, double-spaced, 12” font.
2)      1st paragraph is your Introduction with the position you are taking in your essay.  Your thesis statement is your position.  Your position is opposite to Balko’s.  Include in your thesis statement brief key words of arguments you will be presenting in your essay.
3)      3 Body paragraphs:
–1st and 2nd body paragraphs will each discuss one argument each, i.e., you have 2 different arguments. Expand your arguments and provide plenty of support.
–3rd body paragraph will contain a counterargument and your rebuttal of that counterargument. Also provide plenty of support.
4)      You can conduct some research.  Instructions for doing research is found in our Week 7.
5)      But on no account can any student copy word for word or phrases or paragraphs from his/her research resources.  You can use the ideas you find, but adopt the ideas and write in your own words. Any plagiarism will net you “0” points.
6)      Make sure you have a Conclusion paragraph that summarizes your thesis statement, your 2 arguments and 1 counterargument.
7)      Review the lessons on how to write an Argumentative Essay posted at the start of our Week 11 before attempting this assignment.
