For this week, you will need to explore the digital and physical resources at the Jerry Falwell Library to find relevant and current sources that are related to your research issue and intent. These sources will be your entry-point into the conversation surrounding your research issue, so your goal will be to research and discover four separate academic sources that are reputable, relevant, current, and scholarly. Here is the requirement for what those sources must be:
Two printed books (Encyclopedias, Britannica, and Dictionaries do not count)
Two peer-reviewed, scholarly journal articles
To find those sources, you will need to carefully search through the Library’s various books, scholarly articles, and academic databases related to your topic. That means you will need to use the skills and information you learned from this course and through various Library resources to investigate and research strictly academic sources. The reason for finding both types of sources is that articles are narrower in scope and can be very specific, while books tend to cover broader themes but can still be applicable to a specific research question.
Note: Only peer-reviewed sources should be used for this assignment. Book Reviews, Abstracts, Editorials, and Opinion Pieces do not count as viable sources for this assignment, so avoid them.
Final Note: If you are unsure about what constitutes an academic source, talk with a librarian or your professor about a potential source. Do not settle for bad sources.
Instructions
Download the Inquiry Portfolio Project: Location of Sources Template. On this template, you will need to complete several steps as you explore the digital and physical resources of the Jerry Falwell Library databases. Your completed template should reflect multiple search strategies and use of the Jerry Falwell Library. Additionally, you need to fully complete at least 10 different searches on the template to receive credit for the assignment. You may add lines for more searches if necessary.
On the template, you need to: Note the date of your search.
Identify your search tools (physical catalogue, name of database, or search engine).
Note the search strategies you used to find your results.
Note the number of results.
Compose an initial evaluation of results. For each search, you need to detail what changed, improved, or was made worse from the previous searches you conducted. These evaluations need to be substantial and thoroughly explain why you have performed the search. 3-4 sentences per search will usually be enough, but you may find the need to write more.
Think in terms of a search and source’s quality, relevance, and purpose – keep in mind that you must clearly identify 4 distinct sources (two books and two articles) that might be potential sources for your research and inquiry process.
