Discussion Board Question Options
In what ways did the Truman Doctrine establish a dangerous precedent?
President Truman referred to the Truman Doctrine and Marshall Plan as “two halves of the same walnut.”  Explain the similarities and differences between these two aspects of containment.
How did the Cold War shape American politics?
How did the Cold War shape American culture?
Watch and analyze the following 2 minute video clip of See it Now, with Edward Murrow, that aired on March 9, 1954. Since this is a primary source, let’s analyze it with our usual primary source questions: What stands out to you about the video clip?  It can be theme or a specific quote.  Why? Connection:  What does this video, which is a primary source document, reveal about the time period or the concepts we are covering this week?  Be sure to offer specific evidence from the video.
Analyze the assigned Voices of Freedom document by answering these questions:  What do you find interesting or important about this document? What quote from the document stood out to you.  Why? (In other words, what was it about this quote that stood out to you). Note:  Be sure you reference the actual document, and not Foner’s introduction to the document. Connection: What does this document tell you about life in America at the time it was written? Avoid answering all of the VOF questions in one, long-winded paragraph.  Maintain clarity for your audience (classmates/me) by breaking  it up.  Ideally, copy/paste each mini-question in the VOF (in bold above) and place your corresponding  answer under each mini-question.
Purpose
What’s the point?
Purpose:  Why am I having you do this?  Writing a short answer to the prompts requires students to reflect on the material (facts) they’ve learned, articulate their knowledge and apply it to a new situation; causing them to evaluate the most important and relevant components of their argument.  In other words, students are solving problems and not simply memorizing/regurgitating facts.  Finally, Discussion Boards are an effective way to not only review the material, but they also help your classmates with student-student learning.  That’s one of the reasons you’re required to make a classmate response.
Grading Expectations and Standards
Be sure you’ve reviewed the Discussion Board Details
outlined in the Syllabus.
Your response requires one citation from the assigned material.  I’ve created a handout – Examples of Discussion Board Citations
– to help students understand citation standards.
Don’t forget to make a classmate response.  Review the handout – Examples of Classmate Responses
– for details and guidelines.
Discussion Board Questions are graded on a “Good Faith Effort.”  The attached Rubric provides detailed coverage of Discussion Board Grading.  If you look on the top right corner of this DB question, you’ll see a little drag down tool bar.  Click on that and it will show you the rubric.
Finally, remember that your submissions should be your final draft, thus no edits are allowed and you will be graded on whatever your initial post is.  I will not accept “oops, I forgot to mention this” or “my cat accidentally pressed submit before I was ready,” etc. If this does occur, make sure you are familiar with the the “Life Happens Clause” on page 3 of the syllabus.
