Objective: Students will show their knowledge of concepts and topics related to gender, sex, and sexuality and the relationship between gender and the family, educational systems, or the workplace by analyzing a movie of their choice from the list below.
Course Competencies:
Read with comprehension.
Make connections in learning across the disciplines and draw logical conclusions.
Demonstrate problem-solving through interpreting, analyzing, summarizing, and/or integrating a variety of materials.
Apply learning in academic, personal, and/or public situations.
Any of the other competencies depending upon the concepts and topics that they chose
Assignment:
Students are to write a 3-5 page movie critique in APA format with in text citations and APA reference page.
In this paper students are to create a clear introduction that states what movie they are critiquing, a summary of the movie and include a quote or something that they think may catch the readers’ eye. The introduction should present three or more gendered topics, concepts, or key points or themes that will be discussed in regards to the movie that was chosen. Examples of gendered topics, concepts, key points and themes include three or more of the following: gendered institutions such as the family, educational systems, the workplace, and religious contexts, culture, sexual scripts, gendered media, gender socialization, heterosexuality, homosexuality, intersectionality, nature v. nurture, power, femininity, masculinity, gender fluidity, doing gender, gender roles, gender stereotypes, etc…).
In the body, the student will develop a discussion of their position on each of three selected topics, concepts, or themes about which they are writing using examples from the movie to support their insights. State what you believe the movie has to say about gender, using evidence from the movie. Include events from the plot, descriptions of important scenes, and direct quotes from character dialogue to make your point. Don’t summarize the whole movie; rather, focus on the parts of it that are most important to your argument. Remember to also use your textbook to define terms and to support your thesis.
Here are a few things that you can discuss in the critique:
What gendered themes or topics related to politics does you think your movie deals with? Please see the topics in the chapter of your book covered this week (Chapter 10 and/or previous chapters).
How does your movie portray concepts, theories, or themes related to gender and politics that you have chosen? Are the stereotypical or accurate? Are they positive or negative? Do they poke fun of them? What kind of impression does this make about this group?
In what way does the movie distort or represent the gendered society of that period of time?
Are there any social concerns related to gender that are discussed or portrayed in the movies?
Select observations that are surprising or startling. A gendered movie analysis that makes unexpected observations will be much more interesting than one that focuses on obvious things.
These are not all encompassing. If you have an idea then ask. These are just a few suggestions.
Write a conclusion, restating your main thesis and showing how it relates to a broader gendered perspective. You may wish to reflect on the movie’s continued relevance to current events, for example or, if it is no longer relevant to our culture, discuss what has changed.
