There are FIVE components to this project.
1. Title page: one cover page indicating the following:
• A creative title for your paper (do not call it “Final Project: Map My Closet”)
• Your full name
• The course number, section number, title of course
• Instructor’s name
• Date of submission
2. Data Collection I: Closet Chart
• Data collection: Go through your closet (or dresser, or the pile of clothes on your
floor…) and find fifteen (15) items of clothing (pants, shirts, underwear, shoes, etc.).
Note that you must include items of clothing that are made in at least six different
countries. Also, if the tag has faded/been removed, you won’t be able to collect the
necessary information and you need to choose a different item.
• Closet Chart: Fill in the chart (provided to you on blackboard). In this chart you will be
collecting the following information for each item of clothing:
1.Type of clothing
2.Brand of clothing
3.Material from which the clothing is made
a) Primary material: which material is first listed and in highest proportion?
b) Secondary material: if there is more than one kind of fiber involved, list
those in the second column. If listed, you can include the percentages of
each fiber
4.The country in which the item of clothing was made
3. Data Collection II: Country Chart
• Create an excel style chart comparing indicators of at least four different countries that
produced clothing in your closet PLUS the United States (at least five countries total).
Almost all of this information is listed in the CIA World Factbook online:
https://www.cia.giv/library/publications/the-world-factbook/ However, you will need to
find sources for former colonizer and average manufacturing wage. You will not need to
cite your source for the former colonizer, but you will need to cite your source for
manufacturing wage (this should be cited as a footnote URL).
• Indicators to be charted are:
* Country name * Infant mortality rate
* Total land area * Adult literacy (USA is 98%)
* Total population * Former colonizer (where applicable)
* Median population age * GDP per capita PPP
* Birth rate * % population below the poverty line
* Death rate * top three commodities exported
* Average life expectancy * average manufacturing wage
* Total Fertility rate
4. Closet Map:
• Make a world choropleth map [a map that uses color and shading to provide information]
that indicates where your clothes come from. You may choose amongst outline maps
provided for download on blackboard, or find your own. It should be an outline map and
not previously labeled with any information beyond country boundaries. The map should
include:
1.A world outline map
2.A title
3.Country names: All countries in which your clothes were produced must be
clearly labeled
4.A legend indicating
a) Type of clothing: color coding represents each type of clothing
(shirt/pants/etc)
b) Material: shading coding representing each type of material (you might
consider grouping your materials into categories like cotton-poly blend if
you have items made from different ratios of various fibers)
5. Essay
• To write your essay, lay out your data in front of you. Look at your closet chart, world
map and country chart. Think deeply about the questions posed below, and about our
conversations in class.
• Write a 750-1200 word reflection and analysis essay.
• Your essay should include:
1. An introduction outlining your topic.
This should be a short paragraph introducing your paper.
2. Data presentation.
This section should take up no more than half of your paper.
In this section, be sure to address the following questions:
a) Where do your clothes come from? (What countries are making your
clothes?) Are certain regions more or less represented in your closet?
