This week, you will choose a topic for your argumentative essay that you will be working on throughout this term.
First, please review the instructions for the ENGL 140 Signature Assignment. In your argumentative essay, you will make an argument and try to get your audience to agree with the argument you are making. As such, you want to choose a controversial topic that has social, political, or cultural relevance, or you may choose a controversy from your field of study.
Once you have chosen your topic, you must take a stand and decide which side you want to argue.
Tips for choosing a topic:
Is your chosen topic of current interest?
Is your topic stance one that others might disagree with or debate?
Can you write about the topic without offending those who might disagree with you?
What audience do you want to address, and why do you want to convince them to agree with you?
Will there be relevant outside information on this topic that you can include in your essay?
For this discussion, you will present your chosen topic to your peers and instructor for feedback. After seeing their feedback, you may decide to change your mind on your chosen topic. In your initial post, please answer the following questions:
What broad topic are you considering?
What is the controversy related to that topic?
What argument will you make (i.e., which side will you take)?
What are some of the subtopics you might address in a paper about this topic? (Do some brainstorming to come up with these.)
Why did you choose this topic?
