While preparing your discussion board activity, you read Heclo’s article, Hyperdemocracy. Hyperdemocracy consists broadly of the argument that in the age of instant communication, traditional political parties, interest groups, and the U.S. Constitution have lost influence with the public. Heclo warns us that too much democracy can be unhealthy.
Yet, with more access, citizens are seemingly less engaged in a democratic society and increasingly alienated from it. Americans often feel they have no voice in the political system or society. Amid this “hyper democracy,” there appears to be a rise in radical or extreme individualism. This activity asks you to explore the idea of radical individualism and how it relates to a good society and civic engagement.
