Exploratory photo project
Due by Wednesday, June 12, at 11:59 pm
PLEASE NOTE: Since you have a shorter turn-around time between this and your last assignment, I will allow a two-day grace period for the final if you need it. Please plan to get it in no later than Friday, June 14, at 11:59pm.
Background
Photovoice is a qualitative research method grounded in feminist theory and used to gather information from study participants using photography as a tool to actively convey concerns and strengths of the individual and community (Wang & Burris, 1997). This technique has been adapted to classroom projects as a way for instructors to value student experience and knowledge and for students to be more active in demonstrating their insights and understanding of a topic (MacPherson, et al., 2022; Robinson-Keilig, et al., 2014).
For your final, you are asked to use Photovoice to illustrate your understanding of concepts that you have learned through the course.
Instructions
Choose theories or cognitive experiences or physical experiencesfrom 6 different developmental stages that you have learned about through the class.
Each concept should relate to a different age or stage of life. For example, if you use a theory or experience about adolescence, the others should not be about issues related to the teen years.
If you need to refresh your memory on what we have covered, please review your notes, the readings, and/or the videos and podcasts from each week.
Take photos to illustrate these theories or experiences. These should be original photos that you take and NOT from the internet.
You will submit 6 photos as part of your final project, one for each theory/experience.
If your photos have identifiable people in them, then you must obtain consent. Please use this form and include it with your presentation. If people are not identifiable because their back is to the camera or they are in the background, then you do not need to get consent.
If you do not have access to a camera, please let me know as soon as possible so that we can talk about alternatives.
Please note that as a GCC employee, I am a mandated child abuse reporter so if there are images that reflect child abuse, I am required to make a report to the Los Angeles County Department of Child and Family Services, as well as the police.
Display. Create a PowerPoint/Google presentation with one photo on each slide. Your presentation should include:
A title page with a title for your project and your name.
6 photo slides. Each slide should have the following on it:
Title for the photo
Photo
A caption that includes the title of the photo as well as the date and time it was taken.
Reflective writing (see step 4 below).
Consent forms can be added as extra slides at the end or submitted separately.
Reflective writing. Tell me how this photo illustrates a theory or cognitive or physical experience that occurs during the developmental stage by answering the following questions in 2-3 paragraphs.
What is happening in the photo or what does it show?
What developmental stage or time of life is represented?
What theory or change is being illustrated? Please explain what it is, in your own words with no copy/pasting, quotations, or AI.
How does that theory or experience impact the lives of people in that stage of life?
Please only use the information in the textbook. And while you do not need to provide citations for the textbook, you must still use your own words.
Share. An important component of PhotoVoice projects is sharing it with others in the community. Please choose one of your photos to share on this Class Gallery.
Upload one photo to the gallery and include the title, developmental stage, and theory/experience for the photo, as well as your name to receive credit.
This Gallery will not be shared outside of the class.
Formatting
Please only use the information in the textbook. And while you do not need to provide citations for the textbook, you must still use your own words. No quotations and no AI.
Need help remembering how to paraphrase? Please refer back to this page to rewatch the videos.
Please use whatever language or grammar is most comfortable for you. If you use a language other than English, please also provide a translation.
