The Concert Project – Video, Virtual, or In-Person Live Concert
Watch a video of or attend a live concert performance pertaining to Ethnic, Classical, or Folk traditional music (not Pop). We will discuss these types of music in our lectures.
Write a report on your experience and assessment of the music and submit the report in this assignment portal.

Guidelines and Instructions –
Live Concert –
You may attend a live in-person concert performance.
Any of the music concerts given at the school will count.
You may also attend given other concerts on your own.
In-person concerts must be from this semester (not past years or semesters).
Again – the music should pertain to Ethnic, Classical, or Folk traditional music (not Pop).
Virtual Concert –
You may also watch a video or of a live concert performance or attend a virtual concert pertaining to Ethnic, Classical, or Folk traditional music.
This may be a concert you find on the internet, or a (old-school) Blu-ray or DVD of a concert.
You may watch either one complete performance or you may watch a compilation of several live concert performance videos.
Whether it is one big concert or a compilation of several videos it should be at least 75 minutes worth of music.
There will also be a list of possible videos in a “Concert Possibilities” playlist on our YouTube channel (Playlist is under construction and will be added to and updated periodically.)

The videos must be of people performing the music live where you can see them performing the music – no audio only recordings, still pictures while the music is playing, or videos where you cannot see the performers playing the music live.
Again – the music should pertain to Ethnic, Classical, or Folk traditional music (not Pop).
Please Note –
Pop concerts are generally not acceptable – however, they may be used as an extra credit concert after you have done the required first concert report.
Musicals – such as Hamilton or Wicked – may only count as an extra credit concert – again, after you have done the required first concert. No movie versions of musicals are allowed.
The performances must be of professional or college level – no high school, middle school, or grade school performances.
The Concert Report
Must be typewritten in clear 10-12 point type font (no fancy fonts please), double-spaced (but no extra spacing before or after paragraphs), at least 2 ½ pages long. Use proper grammar and spelling.
Include the following in your report:
At the beginning (5 points):
Give the title and URL each of the videos used in your concert compilation.
If a Blu-ray or DVD – give the title and release date of the disc.
If a live in-person concert please also upload a picture of a ticket or a program or a selfie of you at the concert to show me what it was, the date when it was, and that you were there.
General Overview (1-2 ¶’s, 10 points):
What type of concert was this – was it a single concert or compilation of several shorter videos?
What types of pieces were performed – instrumental, vocal, solo, orchestra, choral, small ensemble, etc.?
What specific instruments and vocalists were there?
If notable or applicable you may also include the various duties the performers had – sing, act, dance, play different instruments, conduct, etc., or if any particular performers or instruments were featured or stood out.
You might also include things like social status/generational significance, specifics about context/place, types of pieces performed, specific instruments and voice types, and specific genres.
The music (this should be the bulk of your report (4-5 ¶’s, 70 points):
Pick 4 or 5 specific pieces of sections of music from throughout the concert to discuss in detail. If it was a compilation of several videos you need to discuss at least one song from each video in detail.
For each piece chosen:
Identify the piece of music – either by title, or by timing in the video, or by order in the program.
Describe what is happening in the music and how the music sounded using musical terminology from class pertaining to melody, harmony, rhythm, tempo, meter, dynamics, tone colors, voices and instruments, text setting (if vocal), etc.
Discuss your personal assessment and reaction to the music – what kinds of moods, emotions or effects the music created, how the music affected you, and how the music caused you to think or feel a certain way. What was it in the music specifically that caused you to react that way? Give specific details/reasons/examples based on what happened and what you heard in the music. If the music caused you to think or feel a certain way—tell what it was in the music that specifically caused you to react that way. Give specific details/reasons/examples. Again use musical terminology from class.
The performers (1-2 ¶’s, 10 points):
Describe some things you noticed about the performers.
These could include (but are not limited to) things such as: Was there a particular performer that you especially liked or disliked? Why? What were they doing? What did they do that was particularly good or bad? What caught your eye about them? What was there role in the performance?
Conclusions (1 ¶, 5 points):
Any other thoughts or observations about the concert.
You may describe personal likes and dislikes but you should support your statements with reasons and/or examples.
Do:
Give me your own thoughts and opinions.
Support your opinions with sound reasons (such as why you liked or disliked something).
Show me that you were an active listener at the concert.
Do not:
Copy off the internet, the program notes, or from your friends – copying will get you zero points.
Give only a description of events as they happened (first they played the first piece, then they played the next piece).
Give a fashion report (the lady wore a pink chiffon dress) unless it affected the music.
Summarize the program notes – I can read them as well as you can.
Upload your report in the assignment portal before midnight of the due date
You only need to do one concert assignment but may do one more for extra credit (this has its own submission portal).
