Write a total of 400 words for each question 1-4 combined. The links to both songs are listed below: “St. Louis Blues”: music and lyrics by W.C. Handy, recorded by Bessie Smith, 1925 “That Black Snake Moan”: written and recorded by Blind Lemon Jefferson, 1926
1. Both of these recordings are in the blues genre and were recorded within a year of each other, yet they are very different. They also have many similarities; compare and contrast them.
2. What do you hear as the musical, lyrical, and/or emotional high point of each recording? Be specific both about the point in the song (pinpointing lyrics or using track timing) and why it is the high point for you.
3. In your opinion, which of these two songs is a more “authentic” recording of the blues?
4. Which of the two do you prefer listening to, and for what reasons? Then, answer question 5 after reading this article linked below: “Country Blues Music: History and Artists of Country Blues” with a total of 150 to 200 words:
https://www.masterclass.com/articles/country-blues…
5. What do you think are some of the key characteristics that define country versus classic blues music? This article gives a detailed breakdown of the two subgenera of the Blues. It specifically breaks down the characteristics and history of each type of blues, as well as its origins, which I found particularly interesting. I will say I prefer Country Blues because it has more of an acoustic and raw feel to the sound. However, one could say the other difference in characteristics of the two would be the regions in which they are developed. How do you think a region can impact the two genres to sound so different? For example, what experiences can come from different regions to produce different characteristics within the same music category of Blues? 6. Then, come up with your own original, open-ended question that students can respond to and briefly elaborate on your question. Your open-ended question can be anything related to the country blues and classic blues discussion assignment. (Question 5 above is an example of another peers open-ended question, however, you do not need to have your question based on an article.)
