First you will need to contact me about a topic. This is a one sentence assignment, but it does
need my prior approval. You can choose any relevant ethical topic. Choose one from the text if
you like, or from another source. Here are some examples:
“I want to write about abortion.”
“I want to write about euthanasia.”
“I want to write about social justice.”
This one sentence is 5% of your paper grade
The paper is a position paper, so you will need to try to argue for or against something. What
you are arguing is called your thesis. Here are some samples:
Abortion is should be legal in all circumstances.
Abortion should be illegal after the second trimester.
The death penalty should be abolished.
The death penalty should be maintained.
Utilitarianism is a dangerous way of doing ethics.
Ethics cannot be done without some reference to a higher being.
I will be a help to you in crafting your thesis. Contact me via email with some thesis proposals. If
you do that quickly you will find that the paper is easier to write.
The one sentence thesis is 5% of your essay grade.
Once your thesis is developed you will need to develop reasons for why you hold the position
you do. So, once you develop your thesis, ask yourself, “why do I think this way?” You need to
develop several good reasons for your position.
After you have your reasons, you need to find evidence for your reasons. What evidence shows
that my reasons are correct? What evidence would lead a clearly thinking person to hold to my
position?
You should also be able to address a counter argument. If someone would disagree with you,
address their argument and show why it is flawed. Is their reason weak? Is their evidence
faulty? Are they missing important data?
Once you have considered these questions you are ready to begin your paper. You will turn in
the first paragraph of your paper, the arguments you will demonstrate, the counter-argument
you will refute, and your sources.
