Greetings Scholars,
Hamilton: An American Musical took the world by storm in 2015. It is so rare for a musical to cross over, but by the end of the 2015 everyone wanted a ticket, no one could get one and almost everyone knew the lyrics to at least most (if not all) of the songs (including yours truly).
Part of this musical’s incredible appeal is the use of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) actors in the roles of our Founding Fathers and Mothers, to tell the story of the founding of America. Combined with the integration of a variety of musical styles including rap, hip-hop, jazz, and traditional musical theatre, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s piece about the first ever Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton is both a story about history and a reflection of contemporary America. For your Hamilton response I want you to ponder on what that means. Breaking down the dichotomy of past and present, and historical and fictional in Hamilton, discuss the importance of this musical in the larger framework of dramatic storytelling. So, how is it telling the story and why is a musical about the birth of America so appealing to contemporary audiences? Use elements from the performance such as song lyrics, costumes, movement, musical styles, casting (actors), or even word choice to support your argument. Be as thorough and thoughtful as possible in your response. After you have posted, go and engage with your colleagues. Share your thoughts on their arguments. Did you learn something from them? See something in a new light? Do you agree or disagree? Then I want you to share one thing you are thankful to that person for regarding either this particular discussion, another discussion or just in general throughout our discussions. This isn’t our last discussion board, but it is one of our last boards. I look forward to your thoughts.

**As you write your response, remember to be as specific as possible. Musical Terminology: Hamilton is a musical not a play. The distinction is important because of the differentiating structures of both forms. Musicals utilize songs to propel the story forward, plays only utilize text. Lin-Manuel Miranda is the creator and writer of Hamilton, but he is not considered a playwright because he has not written a play, but a musical. Grammar notes: Song titles should be in quotes. The title of the musical must be in italics or underlined. If you use outsides sources to help suport your argument, make sure you use in-text citations and provide a bibliography at the end of your response.**
