Read the “Key Concepts” for Module 2. Read the Essay by Thomas Dublin on the ‘Girls’ who worked in the Lowell, Massachusetts textile factories, as well as the information included on the National Park Service website that discusses the (mostly) single, rural women who left home to work in the factories, living away from home for the first time. Review the linked “Fact Sheet” published by the National Partnership for Women & Families, “America’s Women and the Wage Gap.”
Using the new terms introduced in Key Concepts when appropriate, write a 5 page double-spaced essay (1000-1500 words) that compares and contrasts the first experiences of the girls working in the Lowell factories in the early 1800s to your first experience working for wages outside the home. Why did the ‘Lowell girls’ go out to work, and why did you go to work, in other words, what was motivating them and what was motivating you? How old were the Lowell girls, how old were you? If you were a minor still living with your parents, were you expected to contribute some portion of your wages to the household income or expenses? What type of work did the Lowell girls perform, and what type of work did you perform? Were you [like the Lowell girls] working in a sex-segregated workplace or occupation? Was there a wage differential between males and females in your workplace [like there was for the Lowell factory girls]? Did race figure into the pay of either men or women in your workplace? Were there other observable differences between work performed by males or females in your workplace, and what do you attribute these differences to? If not, why were there no differences between the work performed by males and females in this workplace? Be sure to use some of the vocabulary you are learning in the “Key Concepts”, when it is appropriate, and make references to the assigned readings and resources as they compare [confirm your experiences] or contrast [contradict your experiences] to your own work life. When you are including quotes or other specific information from the assigned readings in your essays [and you should be doing this!!] include a brief reference following the quote or the specific information you want to reference by including the author’s name and page number in parentheses following the quote. Examples: (Dublin, p. 31) (Park Service Website)
