Reaction Paper
Legal / Ethical / Multicultural Issues in the Helping Profession
Using the Commission of Rehabilitation Counselor Certification Code of Ethics.  The American Counseling Association Code of Ethics, your text and your own insight, answer the following questions in the form of a reaction paper.  (Do not just number and answer questions… must be in written  paragraph form!) The paper must be at least 4 full pages long and use proper grammar and spelling.  Double check your work to make sure it is free from errors.  You will find the Code of Ethics posted under “Course Documents.”  Provide commentary on your own based on what you have learned in this course.  Make sure to reference the Code of Ethics as well.
1. If code of ethics do not provide specific answers to the ethical dilemmas you will encounter, of what value are they?
2. What are common themes of code of ethics?
3. What are some of the main limitations of ethics codes?
4. What are the main objectives that code of ethics fulfill?
5. What is the relationship between law and ethics? What might you do if you were faced with a conflict between a legal standard and an ethical principle?
6. What particular ethical situation have you gained the most insight about over the course of this class?
7. How do you, as a counselor, intend to approach ethical dilemmas you face in practice, given what you have learned in this class?
8. I want you to evaluate the current admissions, appeals, remediation, and retention practices for the counseling program here at Thomas University for their adequacy in ensuring that only competent and stable applicants are admitted and graduate, and that the rights of applicants to privacy are protected.  What parts of the policies you read indicate that Thomas University enforces its obligation as gatekeepers of the profession? Use the Code of Ethics and the Student Handbook to support your answer and position.
