Bill Beam, the coach of Midwest University men’s basketball team, has an excellent win-loss
record, but he has a violent temper and often verbally abuses his players both on and off the
court. The athletic director (AD) has heard this abuse and also has seen Beam push and slap
players on a number of occasions during practice. The AD, who is Beam’s immediate supervisor,
is intimidated by Beam and has never spoken to him about his behavior or in any other way tried
to discipline him.
One day after a humiliating loss to a rival university, Beam, in a fit of rage, grabs a player and
slams him against a locker. The player suffers a concussion and severe neck injury.
