Purpose of Assignment
Much like the income statement assignment, the purpose of this assignment is to apply the concepts of the balance sheet to calculate year-over-year data and analyze the factors that influence the change. By applying the balance sheet concepts to the same set of financials as the income statement assignment, students will gain additional insights and confidence in their financial acumen. The assignment this week is to calculate and analyze a Balance Sheet.
If you have not done the Balance Sheet exercise (see week two assignment note), now would be a good time to do it as it will greatly help you with the assignment. The assignment specifics are similar to the Balance Sheet exercise in Appendix B of your textbook.
The assignment has two parts. Both parts involve using the Balance Sheet from Apple. See attachment.
Part one. Using the Apple Balance Sheet, perform the following calculations. You can create a table or spreadsheet for your answers. Show the formulas you used to make your calculations as well as the results.
1. Percentage change in total assets, liabilities, and equity for 2012 to 2013. For clarity, this means you will do three calculations, one for each major component of the balance sheet.
Part two
Based on your results, answer the following two questions.
What trends do you see by looking at the Balance Sheet itself, the raw numbers? What are they telling you?
Look at your percentages, what are they telling you? Note: Identify yourself and this assignment (Income Statement: Calculation and Analysis) on the cover page of your paper. The paper is expected to contain the following:
Calculations. Show formulas and results. Grading will be based on using the correct formula and correct results.
Analysis.
Restate the questions and your responses. Grading will be based on your level of insight. This will require some research. Show at least three external references. There are many articles on Apple so you should not have any problem finding material.
As for your analysis volume, think about two paragraphs per question. The two paragraphs should equal about a page for each question. This is the minimum. You can include graphs and any other related information. Your submission should be in MS Word. If you are using Excel for the calculations, you can embed it in the document or create two separate documents.
I attached the file that you will be referencing. Make sure to do two paragraphs per question like noted in instructions.
