Special Project #2 Instructions
WHAT IF VIDEO COMMERCIALS EXISTED THEN?Your assignment is to make 4 to 8 modern commercials (ex. four 30-second vids or eight 15-second vids or any combination thereof) based on print ads from 1860 issues of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.   Step 1: Research the newspapers, which have already been sorted for you. If you look carefully, you will see that some ads are disguised as articles, and these can be even better than the more visual ads. A good tip is that you want to spread out your research dates. Often the same ads ran for a certain period of time, so looking at back-to-back dates is not that helpful. Also, you will see some seasonal items, such as special Christmas products or summer clothing, so look around.   https://archive.org/search?query=illustrated+newspaper+1860 Step 2: Download the print ads. To get large ads, click on the edition of the paper that you want. It will open up in a viewer. Scroll down, and on the right side of the page, you will see download options. Click “SHOW ALL” at the bottom of that list. From the next list, find the one that says JP2.zip as the extension at the end, and click “VIEW CONTENTS” in parentheses next to JP2.zip. These are the pages of that paper. Click the one where you found your ad by hitting the jpg version to the right of it.  You now have a very large page that you can manipulate for your video. JP2 files can be opened with a shareware program called GIMP and then exported as .JPG files simply by clicking “export” and changing the file extension to .JPG. https://www.gimp.org/ Step 3: Crop your picture to isolate the ad you have selected. You may at this point need to add some related images to your materials. If so, use the Library of Congress image website because it will already be vetted for you along with something that you can easily cite. Step 4: Produce your commercial video. You and/or your voice will be part of the video, so you can start with a video of yourself or with a voiceover. You can then add a the print ad itself and any related images you might need. You may produce it in either 16:9 (like you see on YouTube) or 9:16 (like you see on TikTok). Programs that could help you do this and are free to download are:Openshot (Video Editing)VSDC (Video Editing)Audacity (For Audio Track Recording)I have used these and can help you with them. There are, of course, about 100 other types.  Step 5: When you are done, write a works cited page in MLA format, with a separate entry for each of your sources. The following link can help.https://www.citefast.com/?s=MLA You will be graded on the following criteria: Quality of Historic Content, Audio Quality, Video Quality, Script Quality, Creativity      Furthermore there will be automatic penalties for the following:Format penalties: no works cited -5; under 2 minutes -5Tardiness penalties: -10 one class late; papers not accepted over two weeks late or the end of class work. *Failure to follow the parameters of the assignment to be penalized at the instructor’s discretion.SUBMISSION: Submit videos (.MOV or .MP4 files), copies of the original print ads (.JPG files), and a copy of works cited in .DOCX format (1 file) all at the same time in a single Blackboard submission. DO NOT submit links to cloud content. If you have 4 ads, this will be 9 total files. Attach the actual files. DO NOT submit in Pages format. You will also submit a PRINT COPY of the works cited page (Except Internet students). Submission Bonus: 2 pts. If these directions are followed exactly, there is a 2-point submission bonus.
