I WILL NEED A ROUGH DRAFT OF THE THESIS STATEMENT AND THE 1ST PARAGRAPH OF THE BODY) WRITING CRITIERA BELOW:
After reading the assigned selections, decide which one you identify with the most.
Start by writing a summary of the main ideas from your chosen piece, following this structure:
Introduce the work and the author.
Formulate a topic sentence that encapsulates the main idea(s) as you understand them.
Include supporting sentences that explain each distilled idea from the main piece, arranged as they appear in the original work.
Conclude with a sentence that sums up the essay’s overall point. (Refer to the RFW material on pages 40-54 for guidance on paragraph structure.)
Once your summary is crafted, generate a transitional expression and thesis statement that conveys your interpretation of the piece’s main idea. Whether you agree, disagree, or build upon the author’s main point, ensure your thesis clearly expresses your viewpoint and includes supporting key points. (Review the RFW section on thesis creation on pg. 66 for assistance.)
Turning to your comprehensive thesis statement, use the first point of support to craft a compelling topic sentence that begins the first body paragraph of a formal essay supporting your thesis.
Draft this body paragraph, integrating a variety of supporting elements, including at least one instance of paraphrase, summary, or direct quotation from the original essay. Ensure you skillfully blend source information with your own words and appropriate signal phrases.
Upon completion, locate your reference to the source essay within your paragraph and correctly cite it using an in-text citation. Remember to use a good signal phrase and include the page number, if applicable. (Note: If the author’s name is in the signal phrase, you don’t need to include it in the parentheses.)
Post your summary, thesis statement, and the draft of your first supporting paragraph to the discussion board thread for this assignment.
Finally, contribute to our learning community by providing constructive feedback on at least three of your classmates’ posts. Look for strengths in their work and suggest areas where they might refine their drafts for even better results.
This assignment will help refine your skills in interpretation and argumentation, improve your ability to cite sources correctly, and foster a supportive learning community through meaningful peer feedback.
