Section I: 72 points (18 points each). Answering the following four essays in about 600-750 words per essay. 
Essay 1: Dante
Through a discussion of the pilgrim’s conversations with three sinners, describe what those in hell have in common and why (besides their specific sin itself) they’re in hell. 
Essay 2: Machiavelli
Write an essay that examines Machiavelli’s evaluation of Cesare Borgia and what that reveals about Machiavelli’s worldview and view of justice. Make sure to bring in the second half of the book to consider why Machiavelli believes that rulers must act immorally (and make sure to provide examples of some of the vices that help sustain a prince’s rule). Why is it better to be feared than loved, according to Machiavelli? In chapter 26, Machiavelli argues that his advice for the Medici is just. Consider his argument; do you agree or not?
Essay 3: Hamlet
According to Marcellus, “Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.” Do not deal with the fact that there are some bad individuals who are in charge; instead explain what is wrong with the “culture,” namely, the ethos and values of the court as exemplified by the main characters. Specifically, give numerous examples of characters who engage in Machiavellian behavior and difficulty in knowing who/what to believe. Also, give examples of how Hamlet incorporates the religious uncertainty brought about by the Catholic-Protestant hostilities of the age?How does the “play within a play” (where the king storms off) demonstrate how hard it is to be sure about anything?

I believe in the value of self-reflection as a key component to personal growth and have tried to create a class where you learn to better critique yourself and the world around you. For your final assignment for this class, please write an essay discussing what you’ve learned from time together. Your essay should show real engagement with at least four of the works we’ve read. In terms of style, this can be informal/personal.
Write an essay that discusses how this class has helped refine/confirm,/amend/transform your worldview. In what ways has this course and our examination of the Search for Justice in the Western Tradition gotten you to think seriously and critically about societal values and the justness of our own society? About your values, sense of justice, and search for meaning? 
Most importantly, view this essay an opportunity to take a step back, look at the big picture, reflect on the ideas we’ve examined, and consider what you’ve learned along the way.
